Initiative for Multicenter Pragmatic Anesthesiology Clinical Trials (IMPACT) Grant Award
Funded by The Multicenter Perioperative Outcomes Group (MPOG) and the Association of University Anesthesiologists (AUA). This award provides $950,000 in phased funding over three years to support a multicenter pragmatic clinical trial in perioperative anesthesiology.
Winning Proposal
After a competitive process with 15 proposals submitted, the Impact of Intraoperative Oxygenation Strategies on Patient Outcomes (IntraOp Ox) was selected as the winning proposal by an independent and external review board. IntraOp Ox is a multi-center, cluster-randomized, cluster-crossover pragmatic clinical trial lead by Frederic Billings, MD, MSc, Professor of Anesthesiology, Vanderbilt University. The study evaluates the effects of three commonly used intraoperative oxygen delivery strategies on the risk of organ injury or death in adult surgical patients.
Vanderbilt University serves as the Clinical Coordinating Center (CCC) for the project, with the Multicenter Perioperative Outcomes Group (MPOG) acting as the Data Coordinating Center (DCC). Approximately 37,500 adult patients undergoing surgery at four participating centers across the United States will be enrolled under waiver of consent. Clinical data will be collected from sites via regular and routine uploads to the Multicenter Perioperative Outcomes Group (MPOG).
Trial Timeline
IntraOp Ox is being rolled out in phases across four U.S. centers with recruitment beginning in December 2025 and expected to last until March 2027.
