Acute Kidney Injury

Restrictive versus Liberal Fluid Therapy for Major Abdominal Surgery (2018)

  • Results: The rate of acute kidney injury was higher in patients undergoing major abdominal surgery with restrictive fluid therapy versus patients given liberal fluid therapy.

Lung Protective Ventilation

Association of Intraoperative Ventilator Management with Postoperative Oxygenation, Pulmonary Complications, and Mortality (2019)

  • Patients requiring intubation with increased median FiO2, median PEEP and increased duration of elevated driving pressures after noncardiac surgery predict a lower PaO2/FiO2 postoperatively. This ratio may be a potential target for prospecitve trials that look at reducing ventilator induced lung injury.
  • Multicenter study which showed lung protective ventilation techniques are not used as often in patients who undergo 1-Lung ventilation during surgery and continue to receive PEEP values outside of recommended thresholds.
